On Google, no one appears by chance: the person typed exactly what they need. This makes the conversation more purchase-intent driven and much easier to close than on social media. This article shows how to bring that search to your WhatsApp without losing track of what worked.

Why Google is different from social media
There is a distinction that changes the entire strategy. On social media, you interrupt someone who was looking at something else and spark an interest. On Google, you serve someone who already declared what they want, often in a hurry — "washing machine repair in Santo André," "pest control company near me," "management software for clinics."
The practical consequences are threefold. First: the click costs more, sometimes double or triple, and that’s not a problem — it’s the price of buying declared intent. Second: the closing rate is much higher, which usually offsets the cost. Third, and most important: response speed matters more here than on any other channel, because those searching on Google tend to open three results at once and chat with all of them.
This means a Google campaign that generates conversations for WhatsApp only makes sense if there is someone to respond within minutes. Without that, you are buying the most expensive click on the market only to deliver it to the competitor who responded first — the effect described in first response time.
The calculation that decides if it’s worth it
Before launching a campaign, do this calculation with your own numbers. Example of a service operation with a ticket of R$ 2,400:
Budget of R$ 3,000 per month, cost per click of R$ 3.20 — that’s about 937 clicks. If 14% of those clicks turn into WhatsApp conversations, that’s 131 conversations. If 35% of those qualify, there are 46 opportunities. With 22% closing rate, that’s 10 sales, or R$ 24,000 in revenue.
The key numbers in this chain: cost per conversation of R$ 22.90, cost per opportunity of R$ 65 and cost of acquisition of R$ 300 per sale — 12.5% of the ticket. For most service businesses, this is healthy.
Now notice what breaks the calculation. If the conversation rate drops from 14% to 7% — which happens when the ad leads to a slow or confusing page — the cost per sale doubles to R$ 600. If the response time exceeds one hour and the closing rate falls from 22% to 12%, it goes to R$ 550. It’s not the budget that defines the result: it’s what happens after the click.
Practical rule before starting: if your acceptable acquisition cost is less than three clicks, Google is probably not your channel — it’s better to start with organic, referrals, or social media conversation campaigns, which are cheaper per click.

Three ways to bring the click to WhatsApp
Each has a different effect on volume, quality, and tracking.
1. Ad → short page → WhatsApp button. The most complete format and usually the best medium-term performer. You record the visit, trigger conversion for Google, filter out some curious visitors, and deliver context — because the button can carry a pre-filled message specific to that campaign. It adds one more friction step, and it’s precisely this friction that improves conversation quality.
2. Ad → direct link to WhatsApp. Less friction, more volume, lower quality, and poor tracking. Google counts the click, but you don’t know what happened afterward — unless the pre-filled message carries the campaign code. If you use this path, use at least a different code per ad group.
3. Call ad with transfer to WhatsApp. For urgent services, phone calls still convert better. The agent resolves the essentials on the call and continues on WhatsApp to send quotes and receipts.
In practice, the combination that works best is the first as standard and the second in urgent campaigns, measuring both separately for 30 days before deciding.
How to structure the campaign
Poorly structured search campaigns burn budget in two weeks. Five decisions cover the essentials:
Commercial intent keywords, not informational. "Hire pest control in [city]" and "pest control quote" are worth much more than "how to kill cockroaches." Informational content is great for blogs and terrible for conversion ads.
Controlled match types. Start with phrase and exact match. Broad match right away, without history, wastes budget on irrelevant searches.
Negative keyword list from day one. "Free," "course," "how to," "job opening," "employment," "download," "salary," and competitor names you don’t want to compete with. Review weekly with the search terms report — it’s the highest ROI activity in campaign management.
Tight geographic targeting. Local service with the wrong radius is the most common waste. Set by physical presence in the region, not by interest in the region.
Extensions and schedule. Activate location, call, and callout extensions. And if you don’t answer at night, consider lowering bids outside business hours — a click generated at 23h with response at 9h converts well below average.
What to write in the ad and on the page
The ad’s goal is not to attract the maximum clicks: it’s to attract the right click. Three practices push in that direction.
Include price or range when it makes sense. "Starting at R$ 390" reduces clicks and increases the quality of those who arrive. In markets where price scares off, use the condition: "installments up to 10x."
State the region and deadline. "We serve all Zona Sul within 24h" filters and converts at the same time.
Promise conversation, not catalog. "Talk to a technician now" usually performs better than "see our services."
On the landing page, the essentials fit above the fold: what you do, for whom, proof (reviews, time in business, real photos), and the chat button with pre-filled message. Pages that load in more than three seconds on mobile lose half of what you bought. And the button should appear at least three times on the page, as described in WhatsApp button on the site.
What to measure (and what to ignore)
Most Google Ads reports show what’s easy, not what decides. Track four numbers:
Cost per conversation started. Not per click. The difference between the two is your page’s quality.
Qualification rate by ad group. This is where you find out which keywords bring customers and which bring curious visitors — and what’s worth pausing.
Cost per sale, by source. The number that decides next month’s budget.
Average first response time for conversations coming from Google. If it’s above ten minutes, fix this before adjusting any bids.
For these numbers to exist, each campaign needs its own code in the pre-filled message and the source recorded in the contact’s registration — the method is in trackable links. Without this, you optimize cheap clicks and sell less.
Local business: what to do before advertising
For local service, there is a step before Google Ads that usually yields more per real invested: the company’s Google profile. It appears on the map, shows reviews, phone, and message button — and costs no clicks.
Three adjustments that change conversation volume: profile 100% complete, with correct category, service area, and real hours; own and recent photos, updated monthly; and a routine of requesting reviews from every client served, responding to all, including negative ones. Profiles with 60 recent reviews get many more clicks than those with 8, and this applies both to organic and local ad performance.
Once done, the ad stops being the only source and becomes the accelerator. In practice, the same budget yields more when the profile is already well positioned, because part of the trust was built before the click — and because those arriving via the map tend to be closer to deciding.
The 30-day test
You can’t evaluate a search campaign in one week. An honest initial plan:
Week 1 — launch and observe. Modest budget, phrase match, ten to fifteen very specific keywords, basic negatives. Don’t adjust bids.
Week 2 — clean up. Daily search terms report, new negatives, pause groups that only bring curiosity. This is where most waste disappears.
Week 3 — adjust the page. With quality conversation data, adjust title, proof, and pre-filled message. One change at a time to know what worked.
Week 4 — decide. Calculate cost per qualified conversation and cost per sale. If within acceptable limits, increase budget by up to 30% per week — bigger jumps tend to destabilize delivery. If not, the problem is almost never the bid: it’s keyword, page, or response time, in that order.
Budget-burning mistakes
Starting with broad match. Without history, it’s the fastest way to spend on irrelevant searches.
Advertising informational keywords. Those searching "how to" don’t want to hire today.
Sending to the homepage. The homepage answers all searches and none. Each campaign deserves a specific page.
Not using negatives. The negative keyword list is what separates a profitable campaign from an expensive one.
Ignoring business hours. Buying clicks when no one answers is paying for the competitor.
Optimizing for cost per click. Cheap clicks from the wrong people are the worst deal possible.
Not recording the source in the CRM. Without this, budget decisions revert to opinion.
Google Ads for WhatsApp works when all three points align: keyword with real intent, page that loads in three seconds, and someone responding within minutes. Failing any of these, the channel seems expensive — but what’s expensive is the operation around it.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to take the Google ad directly to WhatsApp or to a page?
To a short page with a WhatsApp button, in most cases. It records the visit, allows triggering conversion for Google, filters some curious visitors, and delivers context in the pre-filled message. The direct link generates more volume and less quality, plus poor tracking — if you use it, at least put a different code per ad group in the message.
How much does it cost to generate a WhatsApp conversation via Google Ads?
It depends on the sector and region, but the calculation is always the same: budget divided by clicks gives cost per click; the rate of clicks that turn into conversations gives cost per conversation. In a service operation with R$ 3,000 budget, R$ 3.20 per click, and 14% conversion to conversation, each conversation costs about R$ 23, and cost per sale is around R$ 300 with 35% qualification and 22% closing rate.
Which keywords should be used to generate WhatsApp conversations?
Those with declared commercial intent: "hire," "quote," "price," "company," "near me," always combined with city or region. Avoid informational terms like "how to" — they drive blog traffic, not conversations. And build the negative keyword list from day one, including free, course, job opening, employment, and download, reviewing the search terms report weekly.
