The problem is rarely the number of followers. It’s the lack of a path from the post to the conversation. With a clear invitation, quick response, and conversation before price, Direct becomes a sales channel.

Follower is not a customer, and that’s normal
Many companies have thousands of Instagram followers but sell little through their profile. People like posts, watch stories, sometimes comment, but almost never buy. The problem is rarely the number of followers. It’s the lack of a path between content and sales conversation: the follower likes what they see, but no one invites them to take the next step, and when they do, no one responds in time.
Turning followers into customers is about building that path: content that sparks the right interest, clear calls to converse, quick responses in Direct, and a conversation that leads to purchase. This guide shows how to build that path on Instagram, with WhatsApp support when it makes sense.
The follower’s ladder
Almost no one goes straight from the first post to purchase. The path usually has steps: the person discovers the profile, starts following, begins interacting, talks to the company, and then buys. Each step requires a different action from the company. Trying to sell to someone who just arrived scares them off; never inviting to converse loses those who were ready.
The good news is this path can be built with what the company already has: the profile, content, Direct, and a service routine. What changes is the intention behind each piece.

Takes 20 seconds. Prefer to talk directly on WhatsApp?
The STEP method
To guide the follower to purchase, use six steps that form the STEP method:
- S for Spark the right interest. Content that attracts those with the problem you solve.
- T for Trigger interaction. Polls, question boxes, quizzes, and comments.
- E for Engage to converse. Clear calls that lead to Direct.
- P for Prompt response. Answer Direct and comments within minutes.
- C for Converse deeper. Understand the need before giving the price.
- U for Unite with the sales funnel. Register, track, and follow up until decision.
S: content that attracts buyers
Followers who only like funny or generic inspirational content rarely become customers. Content that sells shows the customer’s problem, the transformation the product offers, behind-the-scenes that build trust, client results with permission, and answers to common pre-purchase questions. Each post should clearly show who your product is for.
T: stimulate interaction
Interaction signals that the follower is climbing the ladder. Stories with polls, question boxes, quizzes, and opinion requests increase engagement and show who is interested. Someone who answered a poll about a problem your product solves is a warm lead. Respond to these interactions personally via message, not just with a like.
E: the trigger to start a conversation
Many profiles end content without an invitation. The call-to-action must be direct and easy: “Comment WANT and I’ll send you the details,” “Message me on Direct with the word GUIDE,” “Tap the link to talk to me on WhatsApp.” The keyword in comments or Direct is powerful because it turns a passive like into a conversation started by the follower.
With comment and Direct automation, anyone who comments the agreed word receives an automatic Direct message within seconds, with the promised material and a question that opens the conversation. Human service begins when the follower replies.
P: respond quickly, within the window
On Instagram, companies can freely respond to Direct messages from someone who wrote within a time window after the person’s last message, about 24 hours. After this period, sending options become much more limited. This makes speed even more important: responding within minutes captures the follower’s attention and keeps the conversation within the window.
For this, the account must be professional, linked to the Facebook page, with messages organized in an inbox the team can manage. Direct scattered across multiple phones means lost messages.
C: deepen before the price
The most common mistake in Direct is answering “how much?” with just the price. The follower compares, disappears, and doesn’t return. Answer the price, but along with a question to understand the need:
“Hi, Júlia! The full program costs R$ 397 or 12x of R$ 39.70. To tell you if it’s ideal for you: is your goal today to organize your training routine or lose weight with nutrition?”
Her answer indicates which benefit to highlight, which testimonial to show, and which objection to address. The conversation becomes a short consultation, not a price list.
When to move to WhatsApp
Some sales are completed entirely in Direct. Others, especially higher-ticket or more complex ones, progress better on WhatsApp, where customers are more accustomed to chatting, sending audio, and receiving payment links. Offer the switch as a convenience, not an obligation: “If it’s easier for you, I can message you on WhatsApp and send everything there.” In a unified inbox, Instagram and WhatsApp history stay together, and the salesperson doesn’t lose context.
U: unite with the sales funnel
Every conversation started on Instagram must enter the funnel: recorded, with stage, responsible person, and next step. Those who asked for price and didn’t reply get a follow-up the next day within the allowed window; those who asked to think get a testimonial or answer to their main doubt; those who bought get a welcome and later a referral request. Without a funnel, Direct becomes a pile of loose conversations.
Example with numbers
A nutrition consulting profile has 42 thousand followers and sells an average of 15 programs per month at R$ 397, mostly by referral. Direct receives messages but they are answered once a day.
The company starts ending content with the call “comment PLAN,” automates sending the material in Direct, responds within 10 minutes during business hours, and asks the goal before the price. In one month, comments with the word generate 600 conversations; 60% answer the initial question and 12% of those buy. That’s about 43 new sales, totaling more than R$ 17 thousand, in addition to existing referrals. Numbers are illustrative; the gain comes from creating the invitation and responding quickly.
What about Messenger?
Companies with an active Facebook page receive messages via Messenger, mainly from audiences who use Facebook more. The same rules apply: quick response, within the window, conversation before price, and funnel registration. Handling Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp in the same inbox prevents any channel from being neglected.
Stories: the most direct channel to converse
Stories are the format where followers most easily respond. A simple sequence works well: one story presenting the problem, another showing a result or behind-the-scenes, a poll asking if the person experiences that, and finally the call to send a keyword in Direct. Those who respond to the poll or react to the story have opened a door. Reply with a personal, brief message including a question.
Organized highlights on the profile, with testimonials, FAQs, and how to buy, help new followers quickly understand what you sell and how to start.
Lives and special campaigns
Lives, open classes, and time-limited campaigns focus followers’ attention and usually generate many Direct requests simultaneously. Prepare the team beforehand: saved quick replies, payment link ready, reinforced service hours, and a keyword for those wanting the offer. A live with a thousand people and a Direct no one can handle leads to frustration, not sales.
Ready answers without sounding robotic
The team answers many identical questions: price, payment methods, deadlines, how it works, if it suits a specific case. Ready answers save time and maintain quality but must be personalized: use the follower’s name, adapt to what they wrote, and end with a question. The difference between a ready answer and a robotic one is this ten-second adjustment.
How to measure if the path works
Track a few numbers weekly: how many conversations Instagram generated, how long the team took to respond, how many conversations reached price or proposal, and how many converted to sales. Compare posts and stories that generated more qualified conversations and do more of what works. Followers and likes remain important, but the number that pays the bills is the sale that started in Direct.
Responding to comments also sells
Comments are a public showcase. When someone asks the price or clears a doubt in a post, others with the same question read the answer. Respond helpfully and invite to Direct for details: “Hi, Paula! I sent you the prices in Direct. Check it out there.” An unanswered comment gives the impression of an abandoned profile and discourages followers from asking.
Negative comments also deserve polite, quick replies with solutions handled privately. Readers notice the company’s care, which influences other followers’ buying decisions.
Partnerships and referrals within Instagram
Satisfied customers tagging the profile, video testimonials, and partnerships with other profiles targeting the same audience bring followers more likely to buy because they come with a recommendation. Encourage customers to share results, repost with permission, and keep the call to converse in all this content.
